Whoosh! I can hear
and feel that the wind of realization is at my back as I discover that this
observation stuff really works!
Being aware of your surroundings is very important,
especially in the business of newsgathering. After reading the selections we
were given in class, especially in “Shiva for a Child” by Richard Ben Cramer, I
can see now that without the use of descriptive, vivid language it would be
nearly impossible for readers to imagine things the writer wants them to see,
hear, smell, feel and maybe even taste.
On paper, descriptive words help give
us clues to exactly what the author is trying to convey. An author should
absorb everything at the scene, take notes, and then write as if he or she is
still standing at the site of the event, describing everything.
Although it’s difficult to start observing and
describing, the outcome is very rewarding. Readers have a more thorough
understanding of the author’s surroundings and are able to comprehend more of
the story in their minds’ eyes. Very deep stuff.
